2016 Johan Chardonnay

The Johan Vineyards enjoy a cool maritime climate and sits directly in front of the Van Duzer Gap.  This gap in the Oregon Coastal Range brings moderating ocean breezes from the Pacific Ocean to the Willamette Valley.  At an elevation of 200-250 feet, these vines sit on a north facing slope of marine sedimentary soils (Helvetia Silt Loam).  The vines were planted in a 5 x 9 spacing in 2002 to Dijon Clones 95 & 96 on 101-14 and 3309 rootstocks.

This is the first vintage of our Oregon Chardonnay, sourced from the Johan Vineyards of the Willamette Valley.  The wines were aged in 14.5% new French oak.

The finished wine has a total acidity of 6.4 and a pH of 3.2 and an ABV of 13%.

Aromas of white lilies and almond flowers, ocean, marzipan, fennel, chalk dust and dusty stone.  On the palate this wine has a bright acidity, with primary flavors of lemon, green apple and a saline freshness.  This wine provides a long talc texture on finish.  An ephemeral wine that is wholly quaffable.

Limited Production - only 170 cases produced.

2015 The Weight

Some of the best grapes from Dry Creek Valley have been assembled to create this wine.  The Zinfandel grapes are sourced from the ancient vines in the historic R. Teldeschi Vineyard, planted on the classic red conglomerate benchlands of Dry Creek Valley in 1889.  As with many of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards, these head-pruned vines are not uniform, but actually hold a selection massale in their midst – including a few white grape vines.  Petite Sirah from the Teldeschi Vineyard's 75 year-old vines, along with Syrah from the granitic hillside of the Vineyard of Pasterick, are co-fermented with grapes from the Zinfandel old vines for greater complexity and depth.

All of the grapes comprising this wine were harvested on September 9, 2015 and blended at crushing.  After a three-day cold soak, fermentation began and lasted for nine days.  On September 20th, the wine was pressed off and barreled down for aging in a cave with an ambient temperature of 60°F.  Following 21 months of élevage in neutral French oak barrels, the wine was bottled unfiltered on June 16, 2016.

This fourth and final vintage of "The Weight" is wine is biggest and boldest of our wines.  It is a testament to the power of drought and its ability to concentrate grapes during the 2015 vintage.  We are very excited to offer this age-worthy beast.

Limited Production - only 170 cases produced.

2014 The Weight

All of the grapes comprising this wine were harvested on September 12, 2014 and blended at crushing.  After a three-day cold soak, fermentation began and lasted for sixteen days.  On September 24th, the wine was pressed off and barreled down for aging in a cave with an ambient temperature of 60°F.  Following 20 months of élevage in neutral French oak barrels, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered on May 10, 2016.

The third vintage of "The Weight" is the most velvety and feminine wine that we have produced.  Mouthwatering layers of tart cranberries, orange peel and boysenberries give way to savory notes of bay leaf, white pepper and cardamom.  Aromas of white orchids, stone dust and dry river rocks return in this vintage and provide a warming sense of home.  This is a velvety, spicy and elegant Zinfandel that is approachable now, but is also capable of aging beautifully for many years to come.  Blend: 80% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 5% Syrah.  ABV: 15%

2013 Weight - Sold Out

All of the grapes comprising this wine were harvested on September 13, 2013 and blended at crushing. After a three-day cold soak, fermentation began and lasted for nine days.  On September 24th, the wine was pressed off and barreled down for aging in a cave with an ambient temperature of 60°F. This second vintage of “The Weight” is notably dense and structured wine.  The wine displays aromas of dried black cherries, cherry liqueur, brown sugar and searing slate dust with a compelling orchid perfume.  On the palate, the wine confirms stewed and fresh cherry, orange rind, stone dust, with undercurrents of spice just beginning to unfurl with bottle age.  Textured tannins provide a foundation for a bright, lifted acidity and lingering warmth.  Blend: 80% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 5% Syrah.  ABV: 14.8%
